Id stay 300 hundred miles max after the first change, for a couple changes then migrate to a more normal interval. Once you get about 5 or 6,000 miles, you'll notice the oil runs cleaner and you can do 1000 miles on ocassion (17 or 18 hours), I would look towards 800 miles or 15 hours as more as more a norm, with mostly street.
I found a 2005 KTM 450 EXC listed for $2550 and I have been in the market for a bike to convert to a supermoto for a while now. I was leaning towards a WR450 because I have heard they are a little cheaper to maintain than the KTM's but I was just wondering if any of you with experience with the KTM 450 EXC could fill me in on how often the maintenance intervals are and how expensive it can get.
The EXC engine is also very different from the SX, for example it has a 6-speed vs. 4-speed. While the RFS series thumpers are generally very reliable, they are still race engines. At that mileage it may be due for a piston, rings, cylinder coating and some head work. Some have gone a lot longer, though.
For your own safety, use KTM-approved parts and accessories only. KTM is not liable for damage that arises in connection with the use of other products. Take special care to follow the recommended run in, inspection, and maintenance intervals. Heeding these guidelines will significantly increase the life of your motorcycle.
Honda_250f_rider. For both bikes, oil changes every 3-4 hrs, trans oil changes every 8 hrs max, oil filter every 15 hrs, clean the airfilter after ever ride, check valves every now and then, replace piston/rings every 30 or so hrs for performance but for safety every 70-80 hrs (some people go more)
Engine life and maintenance intervals are probably a wash, weight favors the KTM, but stock suspension favors the Honda CRF450L. I don't want a 450 or 500 in slow technical singletrack, but I'd be pleased with either one for the dirt focused dualsport riding that I love
